Mr John Riddoch immigrated from Scotland, he came to see the huge potential of the cool summers and cool, but not cold winters, climate and unique red clay soil that is weathered by the limestone. Katnook Estates history reaches back to 1896, when in Coonawarra the first vintage was crafted in the Woolshed by John Riddoch, who was by region a wine pioneer.
Mr Riddoch purchased large parcels of land over a period of time, and he was more than impressed over the time from 1861 to 1867 with the growth rate of fruit trees and the vines. He then commissioned the building known as the “Woolshed”, which even today still operates as Katnook’s barrel room. In 1890 John Riddoch founded the Coonawarra Fruit Colony, and its administration headquarters were established at Katnook itself, he sold off his land in 10 acre lots, it was here at ‘Katnook’ that the Coonawarra wine region was born.

So there is a little back ground on the winery, lets get to the wine itself. So we already know the wine is produced in a cool climate, which gives amazing aroma’s and flavours to the grapes to produce spectacular vintages.
In June 2013 the following write up was made by Ray Jordan on the Katnook Cabernet Sauvignon 2010:
“The title of best wine of the tasting went to the
fabulous Katnook Estate cabernet sauvignon 2010.
When Coonawarra has a great year its cabernets
are hard to beat and 2010 is recognised as one of
the greatest vintages. The Katnook captures this
admirably. Just behind it was the Grant Burge Filsell
Old Vine shiraz 2010, demonstrating the qualities of
the vintage but also the impact of old vines on
these wines. Also in the mix were the Vasse Felix
cabernet sauvignon 2010, Xanadu cabernet
sauvignon 2010 and Fraser Gallop Parterre
cabernet sauvignon 2010 from Margaret River.
KATNOOK ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Great year for cabernet and this is one of the finest
examples. So immensely powerful yet with typical
Coonawarra finesse and elegance. Deep and rich
with lavish texture coming from the ripe fruit and
use of predominantly French oak with a little dab of
American. Ripe tannins and fine-grained oak
feature prominently. There is some typical
Coonawarra mint on the nose working with the red
berry characters. Will handle extended cellaring.

A complex array of ripe fruit and sweet oak maturation aromas. Dark plums, light mulberry and cassis combine with subtle sweet vanilla and hints of chocolate
A richly layered palate of dark berry fruits and subtle oak maturation flavours of mocha and spice. Dark plum & blackcurrant fruit highlight the generous palate, combined with delicate oak flavours and chocolate notes. Fine lingering tannins lead to a rewarding finish
Deep, very dark plum with purple tinged edges
The wine was matured for approximately 22 months in 225 litre oak barrels, 30% of the barrels were new and predominantly French Barriques
An aged porterhouse cut served with potato galette and wild mushrooms, finished with a rich reduction would be an ageless accompaniment to this regal variety (BEN EDWARDS)
Orange glazed smoked Goat accompanied with roast pumpkin and onion slightly doused in honey, green peas, with a tossed salad and hint of fennel to accompany this amazing wine of aroma’s and flavours (Kim Warr)
